A lot of people assume I only listen to rap, which in large part is true. Other than the music I grew up listening to with my parents…what up James Taylor?…I tend not to get too excited about any other genres. However, on rare instance I really do get drawn into a particular group and can’t stop listening. The hard part is getting drawn in. The Kickdrums, a musical duo out of Ohio, first started gaining exposure by doing remixes of mainstream rap tracks eventually landing two songs on Kanye West’s Sky High mixtape. After having my favorite remix on the album, I started to pay attention to their new releases.

The Kickdrums consist of two musicians, one singer/songwriter and one DJ/Producer, are they hip-hop? I’m not really sure. They just released an EP, It’s Just a Game, that is far from a hip-hop record. Alex Fitts provides solid vocals and live instrumentation to tracks produced by Matt Penttila that could easily find their way to a rap album. The EP is a solid collection of tracks that I would easily put in my disc changer before a new Soulja Boy CD.

The best part of the EP (other than it being free) is that the duo also provided a pdf of accompanying artwork (made by themselves) and lyrics. Hopefully they’ll release a studio album soon so I can pay for their music, but until then feel free to download the EP here and here.
