I’ve written before about the power that a single song can have. We listen to albums everyday…thousands of songs, millions of words; yet rarely do we come across a song that simply stops us in our tracks…that moves us in ways that thousands of songs before could not. There is no equation for such a song, no format to follow, no mold to fill…somehow all the pieces simply fall into place. Such a song is rare, but you will know it when you find it. When I listened to the newly released album by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, I came across just such a song.

Consisting of no less than eleven members, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes brings together a mix of unique vocals, keys, percussion, brass, accordions, and just about any other sound you could think of to make music that is simply…joyful. The songs may not all be happy, but the band’s enthusiasm is intoxicating and lifts the soul. Nowhere is this better felt than in their song “Home.”

A simple love song, “Home” is not necessarily poetry, but it is moving. From the moment the first notes are whistled, the song explodes with emotion. The sentiment is nothing new, the music is merely rambunctious, and the lyrics are as straightforward as they come; yet it’s as though they have managed to boil love down to five minutes and blast it out of a set of speakers. People always say that it’s impossible to define an emotion…to put into words what can only be felt, but with “Home,” Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes have done just that…and have even done it with a lively tune.

This song has been in my head for weeks. I couldn’t have described this song any better. Toe tapping, foot stomping, and singing aloud. I guess the way love and sharing your life with someone is suppose to be. Whether you are experiencing it or not. It’s the feeling.
