Flip Cams and Megafaun

June 22nd, 2009 § 1

Megafaun’s new album is set to drop on July 21st, and every single one of you should buy it (just trust me, I know these things). In anticipation of the new album, Megafaun will be touring, and before they headed out west, they made a stop by Duke gardens for an outdoor show. The band was nice enough to let me set up a camera and record, and although this is my first attempt at recording a show, I think it turned out pretty well (HD and all!).

The show was fantastic, and the crowd was almost as entertaining as the band. There was a psychedelic dancer, a hoola-hooper, and (I kid you not) a guy who almost knocked my tripod over three times because he insisted on applauding every song using only his feet. The highlight was the encore song when everyone rushed the stage and had a giant dance party (led by Kelly Crisp of the Rosebuds, who was celebrating her birthday).

Megafaun – “Darkest” (Duke Gardens 06/17/09)

Megafaun definitely puts on a great folk show, and vary their songs between more traditional, almost blue-grass sounding folk tunes and experimental, psychedelic folk (I’m not sure if that’s a real type of music, but it fits). The show consisted mostly of songs off of their upcoming album, which I was excited to hear is coming out on vinyl as well as on cd. And despite one fan’s claim that “vinyl is dead,” I at least am excited about this. The album’s going to be released as a double LP, with three sides of music, and a fourth side with an etching. I can’t wait.

I’ve included video of a few of my favorite songs from the show. If you want to see any more of them, just let me know. Enjoy, and if Megafaun is coming to your town, go see the show.
